Blank Name Tag

You know the name Jesus the Christ, the anointed one, the chosen one, the Messiah, whose name literally means “the Lord is Salvation” and “Yahweh Saves”. But did you know since the letter J was not part of any language until the 1500’s? How his name was pronounced then may be different than you’ve learned now. The letter J is still absent from the Hebrew alphabet so his name tag in heaven won’t be “Jesus” (assuming name tags in heaven are written in Hebrew). So, did people call Jesus to his face Yeshua?

Conclusion; True! The Letter J was invented for the Italian language by a man named “Gian Giorgio Trissino” in the year 1524. In the OT Hebrew, God’s name is “הֹוָה‎ Yəhōwā,”. When spelled out phonetically, this name sounds like Yahweh. However, if you were to take the letters of his original name, and turn them into Latin letters, his name is closer to Jehovah.

This confusion between letters I and J is why Indiana Jones nearly fell to his death in the movie “…and The Last Crusade” when he stepped on the letter “J” rather than “I”. Remember this fun factoid and please don’t embarrass yourself when you meet “Him” for the first time! (Though my impression is He will forgive you even if you get the spelling or pronunciation of His name wrong. This is but one of the reasons I love him!)
