The New Testament story of Lazarus falling ill, dying, and laying in the tomb for four days is fairly well known. This story contains the verse we all volunteered to memorize in Sunday school since it was the shortest verse in the Bible; “Jesus wept”. John recounts the action in Chapter 11. Scoffers doubt Jesus’ ability right up until the time he proclaims “Lazarus, come out!” and out walks Lazarus. In addition to this well-known story, Jesus is credited with at least two other resurrections: Jairus’ daughter (Luke 8) and a widow’s son (Luke 7).
Many of the dead walked the earth just as Jesus died on the cross (Matt 27:52). Christians easily concede this power to the living Son of God, but did you know there were other instances of this stupendous miracle before and after the time of Jesus? So, were other people raised from the dead besides Jesus?
Conclusion; True! 1 Kings 17 chronicles the prophet Elijah raising the son of a widow who initially feared her son’s death came as a result of God’s judgement for her past sins. This “sign” (supernatural event pointing to something), was eventually recognized by the mother who exclaimed “Now I know that you are a man of God…”
Elijah’s young ward Elisha, armed with a double portion of Elijah’s spirit after his passing, grew into his own calling when he raised a boy who sneezed his way back to life (2 Kings 4). So powerful was Elisha’s blessing that even after he died, a dead man tossed into Elisha’s grave came back to life just by touching his bones. (2 Kings 13).
After Jesus’ accession and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit into his followers, the startup days of the early church were aided by many supernatural blessings including Peter raising Tabitha (Act 9), Paul raising Eutychus after a deathly fall from a window (Acts 20) (note some who dread long sermons believe it was listening to Paul drone on that made young Euty fall asleep in the first place! Jesus has conquered death and his followers will have their lives restored, you need only to believe.
